The site where BTP is located was considered, for over five decades, one of the largest environmental liabilities in the State of São Paulo — and the largest within a port area in Brazil.
Under full supervision from the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Ibama, Cetesb, and other responsible agencies, BTP carried out a comprehensive environmental remediation process over 30 months, successfully decontaminating the site and enabling the establishment of a major economic player for both the Port of Santos and the country as a whole.
In 2009, BTP began the process of waste separation and soil washing. Nearly 1.2 million tons of contaminated material were transported to the industrial landfill in Caieiras, in the interior of São Paulo — equivalent to 17,500 truck trips.
With an investment of R$ 257 million, the environmental remediation was completed in March 2012. In June of the same year, BTP received a positive technical report from Cetesb, officially certifying the completion of the process.
